The St. Mawgan Local History Group began in the year 2001 with a small display of pictures at the Grand Opening of the newly constructed Community Hall which had been the old Wesleyan Methodist Sunday School which had been extended and refurbished throughout by the Parish Council.Following on from this the Parish Council suggested that a full exhibition over two days should be arranged later in the year. As the earlier display had encouraged many local residents to come forward with their collections, it was possible to mount a good display of pictures and documents on panels borrowed from the Library. The following year another larger display was held in the Centre with the assistance of residents who collected display panels from the Library and returned them after. Yet more people came forward with pictures and documents to be scanned into a computer. It was then suggested that a group be formed. The Group was formed at an Inaugural Meeting held at the Merrymoor Inn, Mawgan Porth on the 14th, May, 2002 at which the Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Community Liason, Media Liason and other committee members were elected. The membership began with 25 and now exceeds 100. It was agreed to produce a magazine to be called 'Mawgan Memories' and to hold 3 meetings each year at which a prominent local historian would give a talk about local subjects. The annual subscription was set at £5.00 which includes the magazine. Displays also occur annually. In 2003 Mrs.T. P. Young Jaimeson of Carnanton graciously agreed to be Patron of the Group and has supported our endeavours constantly. With our Patron's recommendation and the support of many local schools and organisations, in 2007 we were awarded a substantial grant by English Heritage.Individual membership of the Group costs £5.00 per annum and entitles a member to receive a copy of 'Mawgan Memories' which is now published 3 times a year in March, June and September. We also hold 'Speaker Meetings', Coffee morning displays, and Major Exhibitions.
